★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Yesterday I saw The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and I enjoyed it very much.  It is the story of seven British retirees who travel to India to stay in a hotel they believe has been newly renovated.  When they get there, they discover that the living conditions are anything but comfortable.  Each person has their own reason for visiting India, and as the movie progresses, each one sets out to find answers to lifelong questions or to explore things completely new to them.  The plethora of comic lines will leave you laughing, ironic surprises will catch you off guard and tender moments will make you smile.

The setting and overall look of the film adds a lot to the overall feeling presented.  Watching the movie provides you with the opportunity to stroll down the crowded and sultry streets of India while you remain seated in your comfortable movie theater chair in the air-conditioned building. Having the opportunity to watch a film set in India increased my desire to travel to India even more, hopefully I will someday.

I would agree with the MPAA for the audience of this film, a mature teenager could definitely appreciate this film, but an adult of any age would have the ability to relate to many thematic elements in this film.  It can be sometimes difficult to follow movies where the stories of multiple characters intertwine, but The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was not confusing at all.

I especially liked The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel because it explores so many human characteristics and traits.  Each character is forced to adjust to various situations that put them outside of their comfort zone, and this is a very important theme of the overall movie.  Evelyn states, “nothing here has worked out quite as I expected” and Muriel answers her, “most things don’t…but sometimes what happens instead is the good stuff”.  The acting is exceptional, and watching friendships grow between the main characters is powerful.  I would highly recommend going and seeing The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel!
